CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

When they stepped into the field, there was an entirely different sort of silence that greeted them. Paul couldn’t help but think of that old, tired cliche: the calm before the storm. That was exactly how it felt as he followed along with the rest of the crew of seven, cutting across the field and drawing closer to the basic white farmhouse. For a moment, Paul thought the house looked just like the farmhouse from The Wizard of Oz, sitting grey and unsuspecting just before the infamous tornado tore through and whisked Dorothy away.

But there would be no tornados today. Paul had the sinking feeling that what was coming would be much worse. The silence of the field seemed to whisper it to him. It was a tense energy in the air, something pressing against them ever so slightly as they drew closer to the house.

Murillo still led them forward, no longer stopping every few steps but methodically pacing through the field. To Paul, their footsteps were far too loud, crushing down the nearly-dead weeds and tall grass all around them. He could even hear the delicate click-tap-click-tap of Terrence Crowder’s pinky brace against the side of his M4 rifle. And all the while, he stared ahead. The silo was coming up, momentarily blocking half of the house from his sight. The silo looked odd, like some alien artifact that didn’t quite belong. He recalled the part of Marco Vareen’s story where he’d come out of that silo and it made the silence even thicker and more oppressive.

The bastards are right under our feet, he thought.

He eyed the silo, wondering if there might be a hidden entrance or doorway where someone was waiting to attack them. He felt his hands and wrists clenching almost reflexively, ready to act at a moment’s notice.

Murillo stopped at the silo, pressing his back to it and beckoning everyone else to come join him. They did, trying to angle around in a way that would allow the silo to hide them. Watts edged his way through the others, coming face to face with Murillo.

“The front door is the obvious move,” Murillo said. “But I suggest we split up—send a few around to the back, the rest to the front.”

“I think that’s wise,” Watts said. “Also, now that we’re here, I’m wondering about this silo. If Marco Vareen got out of it, surely we can find a way in.”

“Forgive me for saying so,” Paul said, “but I think that would be a mistake. If you recall, the first time he told his story, he talked about how tall that tunnel was. If we get halfway down it and get found out from below, we’d be trapped.”

“He’s right,” Barker said. She, too, was eyeing the silo as if she didn’t quite trust it.

Watts nodded in agreement and then looked back to the house. “Murillo, you take Donovan, Gault, and Barker to the back. I’ll head to the front with Crowder and Fowler. Whoever gets in first, come to let the others in to make sure all is well.
